Simultaneous prodn. of carbonyl and epoxy cpds - by reacting olefines with peroxy cpds

Olefins (pref. olefinic products of petroleum processing) are reacted with peroxy cpds. (prepd. by ozonising olefinic cpds) having one of the following formulae (I) (R1 is each 4-24C alkyls, or aryl, aralkyl, alkylaryls, or form together -(CH2)n- with n = 3-10); (II) (R3 is a 4-24C alkyl, an aryl, aralkyl, alkylaryl or -(CH2)n-CHO with n = 3-10; and X is a 1-4C alkoxy gp. or a lower aryloxy gp), (III), (IV) (n is 3-10, x is 2-5), (V) (R4 and R5 are H or 4-24C alkyls and n = 2-5). Production of higher aldehydes and ketones along epoxy cpds. improves the economy of the process. The process is esp. suitable for simultaneous prods. of propylene oxide and higher aldehydes, which are subsequently hydrogenated to fatty alcohols. The yields are high (epoxy cpds. 70-97% aldehydes and ketones 65-90%).
