Methanol prodn by catalytic redn of carbon di- and mon-oxides - with hydrogen, all being obtd as a mixt by partial oxidn of methane

Methanol or other homologous alcohols are prepd. by catalyst redn. using H2, of CO and CO2, obtd. as a mixt. with H2 by partial oxidn. of a methane-rich gas using oxygen and steam, and condensing the water remaining in the reaction mixt. H2-rich gas is added to the mixt. in propns. such that the optimum yield of alcohol is obtd. Pref. (part of) the H2-rich gas is added to the H2,CO and CO2 mixt. and then fed to the alcohol synthesis reaction after it has commenced. Process uses a relatively low amt. of energy.
