Biprim, diamines of formula (I)- NH2-CH2-X-CH2-NH2 (I) (where X is alkylene, cycloalkylene, meta- or paraphenylene) are prepd. by hydrogenation in presence of Raney cobalt of dinitriles of formula (II): NC-X-CN (II), also in the presence of an amine of formula (III): (where R1 is alkyl of at least 2c atoms for phenyl; R2 and R3, same or different, are H, alkyl, or cycloalkyl, or furthermore, R1 and R2 together with the N-atom form a satd. or aromatic heterocyclic ring. Pref. X is a straight or branched 2-10C alkyl or 5-6C ring cycloalkylene; R1 is 2-8C straight or branched alkyl; R2 is a straight or branched alkyl radical of at most 8C atoms or 5-6 ring C cycloalkyl; R3 may be the same as R2 or H, or R1 and R2 together form a 5-7 membered satd. or aromatic heterocyclic ring). Suitable nitriles are succinic, glutaric, methylglutaric or adipic. Pyridine, pyrrolidine, piperidine, and triethylamine are pref. amides. Diamines are used in prepn. of polyamides and polyurethanes, and may be converted to diisocyanates.
