The instrument is particularly for shaping the extracoronary zone of a tooth to be capped, having a handpiece with a high speed drill extending downwards. The handpiece has a preset limiting device restricting the depth for which the drill can be inserted into the sub-gingival zone. There is a guard parallel to the drill, having a finger at the end bearing against the epithelial summit to shield it during drill insertion. The handpiece can have a threaded boss at the top on which the guard slides, having a knurled adjusting knob bearing against one end of a calibrated coil spring, whose other end bears against the sliding portion of the guard.
