The novel dehydrogenation of sec. alcohols to ketones comprises contacting sec. alcohol(s), in the liq. phase, at 25-350 degrees C, with a catalyst obtd. by mixing different cpds. of metals of gps. 1b, 2b, 4a, 5a, 6a, 7a or 8, with a reducing agent. The highly active catalysts are largely sol. in the reaction medium such that the reaction may be considered as being effected in the homogeneous phase (contrary to known heterogeneous phase dehydrogenations used solid catalysts based on Cu, Ni or ZnO or liq. phase processes using Raney Ni dispersed in the reactants).
