Prodn. of ketones by liq.-phase dehydrogenation of sec. alcohols is carried out at 170-230 (pref. 185-210) deg. C in the presence of (a) a 12-20C paraffinic solvent contg. not more than 1000 (pref. not more than 300) ppm of aromatics or their precursors (calcd. as benzene) and not more than 500 (pref. not more than 200) ppm of S; and (b) a Raney Ni catalyst contg. 0.1-10 (pref. 0.2-6) wt.% of at least one additional metal (M) selected from Cu, Ag, Au, Sn, Pb, Zn, Cd, In and Fe. The process gives high conversions (e.g. 42-44%) while still producing H2 with high purity (e.g. 97.6-98.3%).
