L-Lysine is produced by culturing a yeast which is a mutogen of a yeast known to produce intra-cellulose lysine which is selected by its ability to produce extra-cellular lysine on a solid medium backing in lysine and containing an indicator showing lysine prodn. pref. a yeast from genus Candida, esp. Candid lypolytica which is mutated with UV light, in a medium contg. a hydrocarbon substrate, pref. a paraffin cut, and L-lysine accumulates in the medium, from which it can be isolated. Prod. is obtd. from extra-cellular medium and does not require destruction of the yeast; also selected yeasts have no nutritional requirement other than for thiamine.
