The scheme for the supply of soft water to sea-locked (F) arid lands uses large dia. undersea pipes from mountain (E) sited rain fed reservoirs to irrigations (G). Several reservoirs (1 to 5) are envisaged with hydro-electric ancillaries and initially feeding pressurized storage tanks (BRPe by the sea; the pipes then emanating from these tanks. The head required is to exceed the losses involved in a 190 km crossing. The pipes are of steel or reinforced concrete and rest on the sea bed; central distribution (A) and local sub-stations (M) with treatment plants are sited in the arid land; catamaran type vessels are envisaged laying pipes; and tankers carrying soft water to and salt water from the arid land are used until the pipes are in use.
