The method of controlling water movement in water supply systems is esp. for irrigation canals comprising several storage sections or reaches (15). Reaches are divided by powered valves or sluice gates, the degree of opening of which are set and constantly monitored according to projected demand and head and tail water levels. A day fraction is used as a base time unit; demand in the reach to the tail of the valve is then summed (i.e. sum of averages over the projected time unit); a theoretical correction is applied relating to the sum of demand in all reaches below the particular valve; and finally head and tail water levels are incorporated in a calculation to determine requisite valve opening.
