An automatic decanting condensate trap comprises a jacket housing cooling coil, connected at its inlet end to the gas flow and opening at its outlet end into a constant level pot previously filled to overflow level with water. The pot, which is partitioned and has each half connected by a smaller diameter plunger tube, contains in its lower half filling holes surrounded on the outside of the pot by a filling dish for the initial fill of water and in its upper half a float connected to a needle valve positioned at the entrance to the gas outlet pipe. A sudden press. loss in the flowing fluid raises the float, closing the needle valve, and prevents any flow down the outlet pipe to the appts. Used on piping systems carrying gas for sampling, in pipes carrying humid gases or on mobile piping, e.g. vehicle exhausts. Automatic decanting of condensate removes need for manual emptying of catchment pots and the float controlled needle valve prevents condensation reaching appts. if abnormal press. loss occurs.
