Biological purification of effluent - esp contg phenolics and detergents using Trichosporon cutaneum

Process for treating industrial or urban effluent comprises cultivating Trichosporon cutaneum in an aq. effluent contg. the necessary nutrient salts and in the presence of a gas contg. free O2, pref. so as to recover separate fractions contg. T. cutaneum cells (for recycle) and the effluent. Esp. for treating waste contg. phenolic cpds. and/or detergents e.g. refinery effluent contg. 50-100 mg/l phenolics and fermentation -process wastes. T. cutaneum converts C-cpds. to CO2 rather than cell material so disposal problems are reduced and the conditions used are unfavourable to growth of bacteria.
