The mechanism may be applied to food tins which are fed to the machine in a vertical position on a conveyor (4). The tins pass onto a second conveyor between widening guides (7), until they reach the first separating pont to pass between the two pairs of guides (9) and (10). The tins then pass onto the second separating point. At this point rocker arms (11) push every other tin of each row sideways so that it is guided into the central channels between (16a) and (16b). The rocker arm is operated by means of a ram (13). The marker mechanism at (17) and (18) signals when a channel is full.
