Feed mechanism directs alumina to an electrolytic cell and includes an inclined V-shaped feeding trough extending over the length of the cell and a number of distribution conduits connected to the bottom of the trough at spaced points along its length extend downwards from the trough. A metering receptacle at the lower end of each conduit collects alumina until all are filled. compressed air is then used to fluidise the alumina which is then discharged into the cell. Used to supply alumina in a proper amt. at a number of points uniformly distributed over an electrolytic cell used in the prodn. of Al. Each electrolytic cell has it own characteristics such that the consumption of alumina varies with individual cells and sometimes varies locally in the same cell. The appts. allows the amt. of alumina fed to each receptacle to be preset by adjusting the length of the distribution pipe.
