Title cpds. are of formula (I):- (where x is 1 or 2; y is 0 or 1, z is 0 or 1, (x=y=z)=2 or 4, x+y and the broken lines are potential bonds, depending on the values of x, y and z). If x=2, y=0 and z=0, the musk odourant is 14-oxobicyclo 10.4.0 -hexadec-1(12)ene and when x=2, y=1 and z=1, the corresp. 14-oxobicyclo 10.4.0 -hexadecane, also a musk odorant, is the cpd. which can be obtd. by hydrogenation of the isomeric mixt. of the hexadec(12)enes obtd. by base cyclisation of the 2-(3-oxobutyl) cyclo dodecanone synthesised from morpholino-1-cyclododecene and Me vinyl ketone.
