1378719 Aqueous or organic solvent polymer solutions; textile sizes MONSANTO CO 3 Oct 1972 [4 Oct 1971] 45480/72 Heading C3P [Also in Division D1] A textile size comprises an aqueous or organic solvent solution of a copolymer produced from 50-92 wt. per cent of vinylacetate, 5-40 wt. per cent of vinyl propionate and 3-10 wt. per cent of a C 3-9 ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, the percentages totalling 100% by wt. Examples of the acids are acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic and isocrotonic acid, and half esters of maleic, fumaric, citraconic and itaconic acids and mixtures thereof. The polymer preferably has a specific viscosity of from 1À2 to 12 at 25‹ C. in dimethyl sulphoxide at a concentration of 1 gm. per 100 ml. The size preferably contains 1-25 wt. per cent of the polymer. The polymers are dissolved in aqueous media by means of a base, or in the absence of a base, in organic solvents such as an alcohol, ketone, ester, aromatic solvent and chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons. The polymers may be prepared by conventional methods, preferably by emulsion polymerization.
