The machines described may be selectively operated to dispense the registered amount in either the minimum possible number of banknotes or in banknotes of a selected denomination. In the embodiment shown the shift register MR, which for example has six digits, registers an amount, say 198,500 yen, to be dispensed with the minimum possible number of banknotes. On initiation of the dispensation operation 10,000 yen notes are dispensed, these being detected by detector R and counted by counter WR which has two decimal stages WR1, WR2. When the content in counter WR coincides with the content on the two most significant digits MR1, MR2 of the register (i.e. 19) the dispensation of 10,000 yen notes is ceased and a coincidence signal issued by comparator BC to automatic carry circuit CT thereby to shift the contents of register MR one digit higher. The number " 8 " is now registered on comparison reference digit MR2 and accordingly one 5000 yen note and three 1000 yen notes, followed by shifting of the contents of the register and then dispensation of one 500 yen note (the numeral " 5 " being registered on digit MR2 at this time). Two further shift instructions are issued to clear the register. The automatic carry circuit (Fig. 6, not shown) also functions to issue shift instructions to shift the first effective numeral in the register on to digit MR2 if the content on this digit is zero (e.g. when only 500 yen is registered two shift instructions will be issued) except when the content on the most significant digit MR1 is non-zero.
