1390355 Preparation of titanium trichloride catalyst component SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 18 Dec 1972 [20 Dec 1971] 59013/71 Heading C3P A catalyst component, suitable for the polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbons when combined with a dialkyl aluminium monohalide, is obtained by (a) the addition of titanium tetrachloride to a trialkyl aluminium in a liquid alkane at -95‹C. to -150‹ C. and (b) subsequently increasing the temperature to above +15‹ C. to convert the beta-TiCl 3 obtained to the desired gamma- TiCl 3 catalyst component. The component may be washed and/or treated with a complexing agent such as an ether. A small amount of prepolymerization may occur to improve the catalyst. In examples TiCl 4 and (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Al are reacted in pentane (and for comparison in 2,2,4- trimethylpentane) at low temperatures within the above range and the products used, with (C 2 H 5 )AlCl, for polymerizing propene, including block copolymerization thereof with ethylene, optionally in the presence of hydrogen. Dibutyl ether heptane washing of the catalyst component is also effected in one case.
