The process is used to reduce the diene and sulphur contents of gasolines produced by thermal, catalytic or steam cracking. The refining can be enhanced by irradiating with U.V. light. The complexes with which the gasoline is refined in the examples are nickel carbonyl, iron nonacarbonyl, iron pentacarbonyl, tri-iron dodecacarbonyl, molybdenum carbonyl, a mixture of manganese decacarbonyl and tri-iron, dodecacarbonyl, a mixture of cobalt carbonyl and triphenylphosphine, and a manganese chloride-triphenylphosphene-lithium aluminium hydride complex.
