1407395 Nitriding iron alloys NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 26 Sept 1972 [29 June 1971] 30481/71 Heading C7U There is included in an iron base alloy of facecentred cubic structure an alloying element soluble in iron which reduces the activity coefficient of nitrogen in iron, and the alloy is gas-nitrided under such conditions of atmosphere and temperature that formation of G.P. zones occurs while nitride production is inhibited. The alloys particularly treated are Fe-Mn, Fe-Ni and austenitic stainless steels, while the addition element is selected from Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Zr, Nb, Mo, Ta and W preferably in an amount of 0.1-10 wt per cent. Nitriding may be carried out at 450-850‹C in hydrogenammonia mixture.
