1381361 Bis-biguanide salts KEMANORD AB 18 May 1972 [18 May 1971] 23331/72 Heading C2C Novel salts of chlorhexidine with a sequestering amino-carboxylic acid (excluding chlorhexidine-EDTA) are prepared by reaction of chlorhexidine or a salt thereof with an aminocarboxylic acid or its salt in an aqueous medium preferably in the presence of an alkanol. The amino-carboxylic acid is of the general formula HOOC-CH 2 -N(RSP1/SP)-Z-RSP2/SP where RSP1/SP is hydrogen, alkyl, carbomethoxy, hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl, RSP2/SP is carboxymethyl, hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl and Z is either the group [-CH 2 .CH 2 .N(R 3 )-] n (in which R 3 is R 1 though not necessarily identical and n is 0 to 3) or a group of Formula III Chlorhexidine forms salts with nitriloacetic acid, diethylene triaminepentaacetic acid, N,N- dihydroxyethylaminoacetic acid and N-hydroxyethylethylenediaminetriacetic acid. The novel chlorhexidine-amiao carboxylic acid salts form with a suitable vehicle an antibacterial composition for use as a disinfectant or for administration orally, topically or rectally. Aqueous compositions incorporate a solubilizing agent for the sequestrate, preferably a quaternary ammonium compound. Quaternary ammonium compounds include cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, myristyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride or hydroxide dodecyldimethylammonium chloride, di-isobutyl-cresoxyethoxyethyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride, di-isobutylphenoxyethoxyethyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, cetylpyridinium chloride, benzalkonium chloride and dioctyl dimethylammonium chloride.
