In the prodn. of UF4 by reacting HF with U oxide, which is in the dioxide state at the time of the reaction, the temp. increase due to the heat liberated by the reaction of gaseous HF and the U oxide is limited by using (part of) this heat to evaporate and depolymerise (part of) the amt. of HF needed which is introduced in the liquid state in or near to the reaction zone. The temp. pref. is controlled by varying the amt. of liquid HF introduced and adding the rest in the form of gaseous HF. The cooling problems are easily solved and hence greater prodn. throughput per unit is possible. The liquid HF is passed into a container heated by the heat from the reaction zone or directly into the U oxide charge.
