A plastic material (11) is applied to the hot metallic article (15), the plastic being softened by the heat from the article and solidifying when the article cools so as to form a film (13) of material which adheres to the article and has a profile which includes the characteristics of the desired marking. The plastic material (11) is in the form of a thin sheet with one or more apertures (12) formed in it, the whole being applied to the metallic article. Alternatively the plastic material may be in the form of small particles which are made to pass through a hole in a stencil and thus onto the metallic article.
