The apparatus (Fig. 2) comprises a settling or flotation chamber defined on one side by a weir plate 9 which has on the chamber side of it a further plate 23 with apertures at different levels 20 and 21 communicating with the settling or flotation chamber, the flow through some apertures being separated from the flow through others by vertical plates 24 and 25. Baffle plates 32 to 35 optionally direct the flow approaching the apertures as required. In the tank of Fig. 4 there is provided shaped plates 32 and 26 between which extend transverse plates (not shown). One leg 28 of one U shaped partition acts as an outlet and the other leg is provided with aperture 31.
