After moulding the tread the plates are replaced by mould halves 18, only one of which is shown, which define tyre sidewall moulding cavities 20 into which uncured rubber is forced. The tyre is cured and the core removed. The side plates are carried by press platens with cavities 13 and plungers 14 whereby the rubber is forced to the tread moulding chamber via an annular gate 24; the mould halves are supported by plates 21 with passages 22, 23 for the injection of the sidewalls.
