1459105 Cooling glass SAINT-GOBAIN INDUSTRIES 13 Nov 1974 [13 Nov 1973] 49108/74 Heading C1M [Also in Division F2] A device for the controlled cooling of a hot glass strip or sheet comprises a series of metal rollers on which the glass F is supported during cooling (e.g. while annealing), means for cooling the glass at a first rate while supported on a first group of smooth-surfaced cylindrical rollers, and means for cooling the glass at a second, higher rate as it passes over a second group of rollers 1, each roller 1 of the second group having a surface shaped so that the glass rests only on a plurality of separated surface portions 6 of these rollers. The second rollers 1, which may be of smaller diameter than the first rollers, may have annular grooves 5 or helical grooves in their surfaces. The rollers 1 may be hollow, the interior 3 being partially filled with a particulate solid 4 (e.g. sand) or with a fluid. The rollers may be of stainless steel. Preferably the glass is passed over the first group of rollers at at least 450‹ C. and over the second group of rollers at not more than 450‹ C. (the temperatures being measured at the start of each group of rollers).
