Hydroxylammonium salt solutions are prepared by means of catalytic reduction of nitrate ions in an acidic medium. The reaction is carried out in the presence of a palladium-containing catalyst, the palladium being present as the element and/or as an oxide, and also of an activator. The activator used is at least one element of the group Cd, Ge, In and Sn. In addition, at least one element of the group Sb, As, Pb, Cu, Ag, S, Se, Te, Tl, Hg and Bi is used. The elements of the abovementioned two groups may also be present in the form of their compounds. The activity of the catalyst combination used is not subject to fluctuations, and the combination shows enhanced selectivity.
