Micronutrient fertilisers used to provide plans with elements of Atomic No. 24-30 contain =1 phosphonocar-oxylic acid of formula (I) (in which R = H, alkyl (1-4C) or -CH-CH-R3; R1 = H, alkyl (1-4C) or carboxyl; R2 = H or methyl; and R3 = cyano, carbonamido or carboxyl). The chelate complexes of (I) with ions of elements Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn are novel compounds, and (I) is a known compound but its use as micronutrient is novel. Preparations contg. (I) may be used in cultures such as citrus fruits, fruit, vines, hops and vegetables, as well as for a large variety of garden- and pot plants. They may also be used against various plant diseases caused by lack of trace elements. The Fe-complexes of (I) are esp. suitable against chlorosis.
