Alkyl cyclohexanone (I): (R is an alkyl gp.) is prepd. by selective vapour phase hydrogenation of an alkyl phenol (II) at 100-350 degree C in the presence of a palladium catalyst supported on an aluminium spinel carrier. The carrier is prepd. from highly active alumina in the form of lumps having a specific surface area of 200-350 m2/g. The alumina is impregnated with a soln. of a cpd. of a spinel-forming metal and spinel formation brought about by heating to 900-1300 degrees C for 1-6 hrs. Suitable spinel-forming metals include Co, Mg, Li, Ni and Zn.
