There is disclosed a method for controlling bacteria, fungi and spores which comprises applying thereto a bactericidally, fungicidally and sporicidally effective amount of a furan selected from 2-(R1O)-5-(R2O)-2,5-dihydrofuran and 2-(R1O)-5-(R2O)-tetrahydrofuran or mixtures thereof; a process for preparing a 2,5-bis(R1O)-2,5-tetrahydrofuran and 2,5-bis(R1O)-tetrahydrofuran; and novel 2,5-bis(benzyloxy)tetrahydrofuran.
