The plate 10 is mounted by means of a portion 11 on a wall 9 extending across the inlet 1 and moves relative to a conical surface 8 which may be rounded at the inlet end. The gaps between the side edges of the plate 10 and the surface 8 are made small to reduce noise and may be achieved by having separate adjustable side edges to the plate 10 which may also be adjustable. The surface 8 may be adjustable andhave different portions with different angles of conicity. The side edges of the plate 10 and the corresponding portions of the surface 9 may be in parallel planes. A modification is described wherein the plate 10 is mounted on the flange 7 and the wall 9 is dispensed with.
