Domestic refuse is decomposed by disintegrating the refuse and mixing it discretely in a vessel in which the refuse soln. is maintained at a 5-10wt. % concn. and agitated to prevent sedimentation whilst oxygen is supplied to promote aerobic decomposition. Promotion of decompsn. is enhanced by maintaining the soln. at 50-70 degrees C until complete decompsn. occurs, whereupon the liq. is sepd. from the solid residue. Aerobic decompsn. has been extended to domestic refuse, enabling refuse collection by authorities can be reduced to 1/5. Pref. heat is supplied only to start the aerobic process, the heat supply being interrupted as soon as the process generates enough heat to sustain the process and the temp. of the process is then controlled within the range required by the process.
