SEEN TO PROMOTE METAL AND ORGANIC ACID SALTS

Soaps and salts of 2-ethylhexanoic acid, for formula C4H9 CHEtCOOH (I), with alkaline earth metals are repd. by adding a stoichiometric excess of alkaline earth metal oxide and/or -salt to the acid, in 2 steps. About half of the total oxide and/or salt quantity is added in each step. In the 1st step, oxide and/or salt is added as a suspension in an ether of a lower alcohol, pref. diethylene glycol monoethyl ether. Bal. of oxide and/or slat is added in 2nd step as a suspension in a lower hydrocarbon, pref. naphtha, with strong stirring. Reaction takes place at 40-100 (50-70) degrees C, followed by cooling to room temp. and addn. of a lower aliphatic alcohol, pref. EtOH. The alkaline earth metal (esp. Mg) soaps and salts of (I) are used as additives to fuel oils, to loosen C black deposits formed in boilers. The oil-sol. cpd. penetrates into pores of ash deposit, expands on heating and blasts the hard deposit away, e.g. in 5-6 weeks. Mg cpd. also reduces SO2 conversion to SO3. 2-step process increases metal quantity introduced to (I), e.g. from max. 20.96 g to 23.4 g MgO/150 g (I).
