Alkyl 2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)propionates (I) are prepd. by treating 6-methoxy-2-propionylnapthalenes (II) with anhyd. Tl(NO3)3 on an inert solid support in the presence of alower alkanol in an inert org. solvent. The prods. can be converted (by saponification followed by optical resolution) into d-2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)propionic acid, which has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic activity. (II) is readily prepd. from 2-methoxynaphthalene; the use of supported Tl(NO3)3 avoids contamination of the prod. with toxic Tl.
