1495659 Laminates ST JOE MINERALS CORP 31 Oct 1975 [13 Dec 1974] 45175/75 Heading B5N A laminate comprises a non-foamed layer of thermoplastic polymeric material laminated to at least one surface of a layer of zinc-aluminium alloy having super plastic properties at a temperature below that at which substantial deterionation of the polymeric material occurs. The alloy may contain 1-50% by weight of aluminium the balance being zinc. The alloy may also contain 0-10% by weight of copper and traces of magnesium, calcium, sodium and potassium. The termoplastic polymeric material which may contain fillers may be an acrylonitrole-butediene styrene copolymer, high or low density polyethylenes, polypropylene, polybutene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polystyrene, polyvinyl fluoride, polymethyl methacrylate, polyethylene terephthalate, polyhexamethylene adipamide poly #- caprolactam, a polyacetal or cellulose acetate. The laminate may comprise a single layer of alloy bonded to a single layer of polymeric material, a layer of alloy having a layer of polymeric material bonded to each surface, the polymeric layers being the same or different, or a layer of polymeric material having a layer of alloy bonded to each surface. The layers may be bonded together with or without the use of adhesives, e.g. epoxy or nitrile rubber adhesives, the alloy layers preferably being chromate or phosphate pretreated. Other layers, e.g. of rubber or glass fibre fabric, may be included in the laminate. The laminates may be deep drawn to produce packaging materials and containers and may be used in the production of gaskets, fuel tanks, automobile panels and static electricity, sheilding materials. They may be subjected to compression moulding, matchplate forming or pressure vacuum thermoforming.
