To bulk the end of a metal string, e.g. for a guitar, the strong end is inserted tin a metal element which is compressed laterally to form at least one fold in its wall, and then longitudinally so that it buckles in a controlled manner about each fold plane, longitudinal compression being maintained until the metal on opposing sides of each fold plane is compacted together to form a ball end. A fold is pref. introduced into each of the pair of opposing walls by compressing the element laterally intwo opposing directions, the strong being bent into an S-shape in which it is maintained during longitudinal compression.
