Silver oxide (Ag 2 O 2 ) is prepared by treating an aqueous solution of a silver salt with an oxidizing agent under alkaline conditions and in the presence of a minor quantity of a chloride ion. In the example NaOH was added to an AgNO 3 solution to which a little HCl had been added, and the mixture was heated at 90-95‹ C. with sodium peroxydisulphate. The precipitated Ag 2 O 2 was removed and washed.
