Process for preparing 1-Cl-2,2,2-tri-F-ethyl-diF-methyl ether of formula (I):- CF3CHCl.O.CHF2 (1) By chlorination of CF3CH2OCH3 to form CF3CHClOCHCl2 then fluorinating this by passing in HF gas in the presence of SbCl5 to give (I). (2) First by reduction of CF3CH2OH with CHF2Cl in the presence of alkali metal hydroxide with or without the presence of water at a press. between 1 and 10 atm. and at 25-100 deg., isolating the resulting CF3CH2OCHF2 and chlorinating this between 15 deg. and the b.p. to give (I). (3) By partial chlorination of CF3CH2OCH3 to form CF3CH2OCHCl2 then fluorinating to give CF3CH2OCHF2 and re-chlorinating to give (I). Inhalation anaesthetic when mixed with suitable amts. of oxygen.
