Overlapping organic contaminant plumes underneath a closed chemical manufacturing unit, were monitored to evaluate the intrinsic cleanup occurring in the groundwater. The field observations have indicated that BCEE (C_4H_8Cl_2O) has been transforming naturally in groundwater into Diethylene Ether (DEE, C_4H_8O_2) under the existing highly reducing conditions. Anthropogenic hydrocarbon compounds (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Styrene, BTES) present under the site are acting as electron donors, and facilitating DEE production. The Natural Attenuation monitoring program has been implemented semi-annually, and will continue in the future to ensure adequate reduction of ground-water contamination at the site.
