The electromagnetic contactor is intended for immediate closing and delayed breaking and has two parallel current paths, each containing a switch. One path has a control device in series with the switch, consisting of a relay with a parallel-connected capacitor and a diode in series to the relay and the capacitor. The switch in the other current path is actuated by a relay. In each current path a resistor is in series to the switch, the control device being in parallel to the resistor in the respective current path. Both current paths are in series to the electromagnetic contactor. Preferably a low power sealed reed relay is used in the arrangement.
