The grabs (50) are mounted in pairs on cross-beams in turn mounted on the gantry, and one pair at least can slide in the lengthwise direction of the loading platform. The gantry can be in the form of a rigid rectangular frame, along whose lengthwise members a number of crossbeams with grabs slide. There can be three cross-beams, the middle one sliding in the lengthwise direction of the platform. Movement of the cross-beams can be effected mechanically, pneumatically or hydraulically, and the grabs can have power-driven fingers engaging in the corner fittings of freight containers and locking in position.
