The parent patent describes the removal of Th and U oxides from Zr oxide obtained from Baddeleyite mined at Loose Kop, S. Africa from the Foscorite zone. The process is modified to reduce radiation to below 2000 pC/g of Zr oxide obtained from the carbonate zone by adding 0.1-0.5 wt. % alkali- or ammonium phosphate (referred to Zr oxide) to the colloidal suspension of Zr oxide hydrate, pref. by adding diammonium hydrogen phosphate.
