Railway points ofr frogs made of normal rail steel - and clad with austenitic manganese steel by electron-beam welding

Process for cladding the zones subject to wear on the diamond or cross-over tongue of railway points made of a normal rail steel, the novelty being that an austenitic manganese steel alloy (i.e. Had fields manganese steel) cladding is applied by electron-beam welding. The normal rail steel is pref. preheated to 100 degrees C, in the zones to be clad and a foil of nickel-iron alloy is pref. inserted in the joint prior to the electron-beam welding. The process gives a simple means of applying an austenitic manganese steel cladding, the resulting part being less expensive than one made entirely of the high Mn steel.
