Cooled light metal piston for internal combustion engine comprises, in the piston head behind the rings, an annular cooling channel (4) which is disposed between a recess and an annular sleeve (2) mounted in the recess and welded to the piston head (1) by a charge-carrying beam. Both weld seams (6) pass the cooling channel at a distance and end outside the channel and end in cavities (5) and the joints extending from the channel to the weld seams between piston head and sleeve are not welded. The annular cavity (5) disposed in the piston head and in the sleeve at a minimal distance from the cooling channel act as stress reducers at the ends of the welded seams.
