The suspended particle concentration measurement apparatus consists of a submersible, watertight housing (16) containing an optical flourescence detector. A pulsed gas-discharge lamp (1) produces light which is focussed through a broad-band optical filter (5) onto a cell through which the effluent passes (7). Fluorescent light is filtered (9) and focussed onto a phot-detector whose output is amplified (12) in a circuit with logarithmic characteristic. The amplifier and pulse generator for the lamp are fed from stabilised supply circuits (13) (3b) connected to a common source (14c) connected via cables to the observation point. The detector signals can be converted to tone-coded form for transmission over the connecting cable (14d). These are then decoded at the measuring site.
