1515369 Gearing for conveying rotary motion; cams; variable-throw cranks; linkwork BRUNDLER AG MASCHINENFABRIK 23 April 1975 [25 April 1974] 16753/75 Headings F2Q and F2K In a variable-stroke intermittent drive mechanism 2, Fig. 1, which may be used to drive an apparatus 3 for conveying and dividing into equal portions a bulk supply of solid, plastic or liquid material, which may include foodstuffs such as sausages, the mechanism comprises an input shaft 13 driven in uniform constant rotation carrying a pinion 14 meshed with a toothed wheel 15, Fig. 2, which in turn carries a crank-pin 16, the motion of which is imparted to an arm 23 of a toothed sector 24 by means of a hinged assembly of three links 17, 18, 19 which are pivoted together upon a common joint pin 20, the link 19 forming part of a means for regulating the angular extent of oscillating travel of the toothed sector 24, and the resulting motion is transmitted to the conveyer worm 4 through a unidirectional ratchet and freewheel mechanism 36. The link 19 is pivoted as a radius arm about a pin 26 of preset location, which can be set manually by means of a positioning mechanism 30 shown in Fig. 3, in which shaft 33 rotates a worm 32 engaged with a toothed sector 29, thereby setting the position of pin 26 carried by an arm 28, relatively to a fixed pivot 27. This adjustment mechanism governs the extent of angular excursions of the toothed sector 24, thereby governing the amount of material contained in each separate portion emerging from the conveyer. A second gear train, also driven by shaft 13, comprises toothed wheels 7, 8, chain 9 and a clutch 10 actuated by a cam roller 39 following an undulating surface on a face cam 38, the cam 38 being integral with the toothed wheel 15, and the intermittent rotary motion thereby transmitted to a second output shaft 11 may be used for cutting the continuous stream of material into separate portions, or for providing a twist to the casing for separating portions of material contained within a tube, e.g. for manufacture of sausages. An electromagnetic clutch 37 may be used to disengage the intermittent drive from the toothed sector 24, and the conveyer worm 4 may then be driven in continuous rotation by shaft 13, through a chain drive means (not shown).
