The master alloy for the prodn. of modified Fe-or- Ni base alloys, contains the base metal and 3 - 25 vol% modifying constituents, opt. in combination, chosen from high melting nitrides, carbides, carbonitrides, borides and oxides of Ti, Zr, Ta, Hf and Th. The master alloy is prepd. by adding the modifying constituents to the melt of the base metal in stoichiometric amts. and at a temp. of the melt which is higher than the temp. at which the high melting cpds are formed, after which the melt is cooled at a rate of 102-107 deg/sec. until the solidified base metal contains a dispersion of high melting cpds. of 5 mu. For alloying Feness, notch impact toughness, thermal stability, corrosion-and erosion resistance and low crack sensitivity.
