Percussive rock drill striker - free travelling linear motor rotor as striker, stator as vibration damper

Percussive rock drill striker mechanism consists of an electric motor to provide the striking force on the portable tool. To cut down on components and servicing, the impact mass is provided by the free travelling rotor component (1) of an electric linear motor, or else the rotor drives an impact member through a coupling. By connecting the stator (2) of the drive to the housing by a system of springs (9), the stator can be used to actively damp down the vibrations which result from the impact actions. The recoil should be absorbed by reversing the sense of the rotor movement with the aid of springs (6). Rotor and/or stator can be made to pump their own cooling air by the provision of suitable valves (e.g. 10) and supply this air through the tool bore to cool this and the hole face.
