In the process for recovering 5-hydroxytryptamides (I) from coffee wax or husks using as starting material coffee wax residues (A) left after decaffeination with aliphatic halo-hydrocarborns or with benzene, ethyl acetate or ether and removal of caffeine by known methods, (A) are extracted with hot water contg. added Na dithionite (II). (I) are antioxidants and can be added to fats or fatty prods. at 0.005-1%. They are as active, when added to animal fats such as butter, as BHT or BHA. (I) are also intermediates for many pharmaceuticals e.g. redn. with LiA1H4 gives serotonin. Addn. of (II) prevents oxidn. of (I) and permits very high yields.
