The equipment protects the environment in the event of pipe breakage, incorporating a retaining strip enclosing the pipe and fixed to the adjacent vall (3). The strip (4) passes round the pipe (1), which is suspended so as to allow movement due to heat expansion at a distance far enough from it for no contact between them to occur under any operating conditions. The strip stiffness is such that it does not distort beyond the leastic limit as the result of inherent loads (due to its own weight, vibration or temperature). Any bending loads in excess of them result in alteration of the strip position. The strip can be of flat iron, with stiffening sheet-metal ribs extending outwards normal to it and welded to it for part of the way along (6).
