Isophorone dicyanamide trimerisation and further polymerisation - by heating, to give novel trimer and polymers for mouldings and coatings

Novel polyisophorone dicyanamide (III) is prepd. by heating isophorone dicyanamide (3-cyanamidomethyl-3,5,5-trimethyl-cyclohexyl cyanamide), (I), or its novem trimer, (II), to =60 (80-350) degrees C opt. in the presence of a basic accelerator, pref. an inorganic base, NH3 or an amine, partic. a tert. amine. (III) and (II) form moulding and coating compsns., opt. contg. fillers and/or fabric strengtheners and/or pigments and/or dyes. (II) are pref. used as thermosetting coating powder compsns. opt. contg. fillers and/or pigments. (III) is heat-stable. Coatings of (III) adhere well to substrates, partic, to phosphatised Fe or steel. (III) can be applied as a pre-mix contg. (II) which is then polymerised in situ by heating.
